Broken Compass Magazine
For this project, we had the freedom to decide the topic for the magazine. Since I was young, I have always been fascinated with other people’s perspectives and ideas. How different people’s views on life shape their art and culture. Since the place we grew up takes a lot of importance, traveling to another part of the world is an excellent opportunity to experience this closely. But since I am a student with little money or time, creating a magazine about travel to learn about different cultures seemed like a great idea.
WHAT I WANTED TO CREATE:
I wanted to create a magazine that would be interesting for students that showcased places where it would be affordable to travel to and the restaurants/events/stores they should visit. I wanted to create a clean and attractive layout that allowed me to showcase these pictures and information in an eye-catching way. I also decided to add odd places or fun facts about places that people might forget exists.
BRAINSTORMING AND MY MAGAZINE NAME
When I choose to do a travel magazine, I decided to look at my competitors and how they laid out their information and the language and images they used as content. In this project, the redesign of an existing magazine was an option, but I opted to create a new one. I came up with “Broken Compass Magazine.” This magazine would act as a guide geared towards students or other travelers on a budget that still wanted to make the most out of their trips—designed for the lovers of food works of craftsmanship and people who appreciate the beauty of architecture and design. The Broken Compass’s target audience is anyone who wants to gain experience and knowledge of the world around them through adventure. This magazine will give an inside scoop on how to get the most out of your travel budget.
DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
-Make a magazine with a relaxing setting
- Inviting language
- Artistically designed assets
- Illustrations and photography that work together
- Exciting and youthful vibe
- Not science-oriented (unlike National geographic)

RESEARCH AND COMPETITORS
My main competitors would be Magazines like National Geographic, Condé Nast Traveler, and Outside Magazine. Many travel magazines tend to steer towards topics like lifestyle and science, leaving the adventure behind. Since our target audience will be young travelers, we want to showcase places and countries that can be interesting and affordable to students and young adults. The competitors show places that, while beautiful, are an unattainable expense for a current student or recent graduate. Cultural rationale current times make it difficult to travel because of COVID19. Travel magazines are an excellent source for people that want to be aware of what there is on the other side of the world or simply a state over without risking their health or the health of others. This magazine will allow you to have an adventurous trip from the comfort of your own home and inspire the viewer to travel to affordable destinations once the pandemic is over, having already acquired an understanding of the place and its culture.
